The next Windows 11 update, version 24H2, is now available in the Release Preview Channel. This update includes several new features, such as HDR background support, which allows users to use JXR images as their wallpaper background, with per-display adaptation for multiple monitors.
The update also includes a reworked energy saving mode, which reduces energy consumption by reducing system performance, saving battery life on laptops and reducing power usage on desktop PCs. Additionally, a built-in sudo command has been added for developers, allowing them to run elevated tools directly from an unelevated console session, configurable in three modes.
File Explorer has also been updated, with the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives, and a scrollable view of the Quick Settings flyout. Furthermore, an AI-powered Voice Clarity feature has been added, which removes background noise during calls and audio recordings, are no longer limited to devices with NPU chips.
The built-in Copilot assistant has also been updated, with a dedicated button on the system tray, and more commands for changing settings and turning on Windows features.
The update will be officially rolled out through Windows Update later this year, but Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install it now. Note that new AI features require a Copilot+ PC, which will be available starting June 18th at $999.
