Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its co-founders including Sam Altman as he believed that OpenAI is not open anymore, it's now a profitable company and it's a violation of the company's agreement.
OpenAI is the most popular AI company right now. Most of its AI tech isn't freely available or open to the public, to use it you have to pay
Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, left the board in 2018. Originally, OpenAI was created to provide AI for the benefit of humanity as a non-profit organization.
However, things took a turn in 2019. OpenAI underwent a restructuring and now has for-profit entities, with Microsoft holding the majority ownership after a significant investment. The current valuation of OpenAI stands at a hefty $86 billion.
In a recent lawsuit, Musk claims that OpenAI has turned into a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, deviating from its original mission. Musk had previously declined a stake in the for-profit entities.
Even though Microsoft isn't a direct subsidiary, it effectively controls OpenAI now. This is concerning because OpenAI's models, such as GPT-4 and Sora, could potentially represent advanced artificial general intelligence.
While the lawsuit might bring some transparency, its legal success seems uncertain. Its objective is to address the situation and ensure that OpenAI remains true to its original vision of being genuinely open.
On X Musk said if OpenAI changes its name to ClosedAI, then he'll drop the lawsuit.
